Mertens embarks on new chapter as investor at Sporting Hasselt
Former Napoli striker Dries Mertens has officially become an investor in Belgian Serie B side Sporting Hasselt and will take a seat on the club’s board, the team announced in a video posted on its social channels. The move follows the club’s recent promotion from Serie C to Serie B.
Mertens’ link to the club is personal: the owner Sam Kerkhofs is the cousin of his wife Kat Kerkhofs, a connection that helped seal the partnership as Sporting Hasselt entered Serie B after climbing from Serie C.
“In recent years the club has undergone a real metamorphosis. Sam, Rik and everyone involved have done a fantastic job.”
The announcement was highlighted on Google Discover under the heading “Fonti preferite” and carried the label “Stampa A− A+”. The club billed the deal as a “Nuova avventura” for Mertens.
Mertens’ involvement adds experience to Sporting Hasselt’s board as the club aims to consolidate its place in Belgian Serie B.
