Merlin Polzin’s heavy defeat forces Hamburg into early crisis
Hamburger SV’s 0‑5 home loss to Mainz 05 on Sunday has left the club winless and without a goal after two Bundesliga fixtures, thrusting head coach Merlin Polzin into immediate scrutiny as he publicly accepted responsibility for the personnel decisions that preceded the disaster.
Season opener turns into disaster
The match was Hamburg’s first home Bundesliga game of the campaign, intended to avenge the 2‑0 opening‑day defeat away at Borussia Dortmund. Instead, Mainz 05 turned the afternoon into one of the club’s worst top‑flight home performances in decades, scoring five unanswered goals.
Polzin takes responsibility and looks ahead
Polzin offered no excuses, stating “The result speaks for itself. It was a totally shitty afternoon for us. It was a thoroughly deserved loss.” He added that there was “no need to sugarcoat anything” and that he accepted full responsibility for the personnel choices.
Four changes were made to the line‑up that started in Dortmund: Zakaria El Ouahdi, Bilal Nadir, David Møller Wolfe and Terem Moffi all started, while Louis Lemke and Bakery Jatta were dropped from the wing‑back positions. Nadir deputised for Lokonga, who was ruled out with back problems on short notice, and Moffi was preferred over Patson Daka up front.
In the opening stages Mainz dominated. Kaishu Sano intercepted a Nicolai Remberg pass and set up Sheraldo Becker for the 19th‑minute opener. Becker then created Philipp Mwene’s second goal shortly before halftime.
At the break Polzin introduced Fabio Vieira, Patson Daka and Shafiq Nandja, but Mainz continued to press. Less than three minutes after the restart Becker crossed for Phillip Tietz to make it 3‑0, Tietz added a second in the 83rd minute and former HSV attacker Ransford Königsdörffer sealed the rout in stoppage time. Jordan Torunarigha was substituted at halftime for sporting reasons, not injury.
Captain Nicolai Remberg criticised the performance, admitting his own error that led to the first Mainz goal and describing the five‑goal defeat as “cheap and far too easy in the duels”. He called the result a “neck blow but not a broken leg” and vowed a comeback.
Polzin concluded that “no opponent in the Bundesliga will have problems beating us” if they continue like this. With the next fixture against RB Leipzig looming, Hamburg sit under early pressure after two defeats and still no goal, and the coach insists the squad must learn quickly and improve next week.
