Media report that Cristiano Ronaldo is leaving the camp

Media report that Cristiano Ronaldo has left the camp of the Portuguese national team in Copenhagen because he felt betrayed by coach Jorge Jesus. The 41‑year‑old captain left the training camp before the team training, after a meeting with federation president Pedro Proença had taken place.

Insight from Edu Aguirre

Spanish journalist Edu Aguirre, a close friend of Cristiano Ronaldo, described his version of the events on the programme “El Chiringuito”. He explained that a meeting on Tuesday had taken place between the captain, coach Jorge Jesus and federation president Pedro Proença.

During the meeting, Jesus is said to have admitted that he had treated Ronaldo poorly during the match against Norway.

“He not only apologized to him privately, but also said that he would apologize publicly,” Aguirre quoted the coach.

On Wednesday before the match against Denmark, Jorge Jesus defended his decisions at a press conference. He emphasized that the same rules apply to all players and that no footballer will change his mindset.

In Aguirre’s view, the situation in which the private conversation became public was decisive for the Portuguese’s departure. The journalist accused the coach of wanting to demonstrate his authority at the expense of the captain.

Ronaldo leaves the camp

Cristiano Ronaldo, 41, left the training camp in Copenhagen before the team training. In the evening he confirmed his decision on social media and wrote that he would later tell all Portuguese the truth about the reasons for his departure.

Portugal won the Sunday match against Norway 2‑1 thanks to goals from João Félix and Gonçalo Ramos, as documented by the photo from Marius Nordnes. The next fixtures are on October 1 away against Denmark and three days later again against Norway, this time at home.
