Mechelen eye 1.8 million‑euro Danish defender as summer target
KV Mechelen have identified a 1.8 million‑euro market value on the table as they pursue 21‑year‑old Danish centre‑back Villads Nielsen, whose European experience could bolster the club’s defence ahead of the new season.
The Belgian side wants to add the defender this summer, noting that Nielsen is under contract with Bodø/Glimt but has not cemented a regular starting place. His profile fits Mechelen’s need for a physically strong presence at the back.
Player profile and background
Nielsen stands 1.92 m tall and was born on 29 January 2005 in Frederiksværk. He spent his formative years at FC Nordsjaelland, originally joining as an attacker before being retrained as a central defender.
He completed the full youth programme at Nordsjaelland, captaining the U19 side before moving to Bodø/Glimt in March 2024 at the age of 19. The Deense youngster quickly adapted to senior football in Norway.
In 2024 Bodø/Glimt secured Nielsen on a four‑year contract that runs until the summer of 2028, locking him in as a development player with the potential to become a first‑team regular. His market value of €1.8 million makes him an attractive investment for KV Mechelen, although the exact transfer sum Bodø/Glimt demands has not been disclosed.
Transfer hurdles and market context
Nielsen has already earned caps for Denmark at U18, U19, U20 and now U21 level, adding four UEFA‑recorded appearances to his résumé. The Deen’s international pedigree adds to his appeal.
He has featured in 46 matches for Bodø/Glimt, 24 of them as a substitute, and made his European debut against FC Porto. Later that year he scored the winning goal versus Sporting Braga, helping the Norwegian club claim the domestic league title.
Bodø/Glimt currently have limited surplus in central defence and intend to recruit a replacement before allowing Nielsen to leave. This creates uncertainty over whether KV Mechelen can finalise the transfer before the summer window closes.
De club sees this bij de huidige situatie voor Mechelen as a chance to secure a young defender with growth potential. Nielsen’s €1.8 million valuation reflects a broader trend of Belgian clubs scouting Scandinavian talent for cost‑effective reinforcement.
