McTominay faces weeks out but vows quick return after heart surgery

On 3 September 2026 former Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay addressed growing fan anxiety after Napoli announced he would miss several weeks for heart surgery. The 29‑year‑old reassured supporters he is fine and expects to return to action in the near future.

Medical experts described the problem as a mild, benign arrhythmia – an irregular heart rhythm that is non‑life‑threatening and should be resolved after a corrective procedure. Doctors expect a full recovery once the ablation is completed.

Speaking at the Gran Gala Del Calcio on Wednesday night, McTominay told reporters, ‘I’m fine.’ He added, ‘The procedure was something I’d planned with the club for quite a while. We’d already talked about it in pre‑season and I’ll be out for a few weeks.’

Medical plan and procedure details

Napoli confirmed the surgery will be a cardiac arrhythmia ablation using pulsed‑field technology, creating tiny scars to block faulty signals. The British Heart Foundation explained the technique employs heat or cold energy to restore a normal heartbeat.

The club’s announcement means McTominay will miss the international break, leaving new Scotland boss Sebastien Pocognoli without his midfield option for the first four matches of his tenure.

Career milestones and honours

He featured in Napoli’s 2‑1 Serie A loss to Como on Sunday, being substituted after 56 minutes, after having played the full 90 minutes in the 2‑0 victory over Genoa on the season’s opening day.

Since joining Napoli from Manchester United in 2024, the Scot has scored 27 goals and provided ten assists in 82 appearances, playing a key role in the club’s Serie A triumph in 2024‑25.

Under Antonio Conte he evolved into a box‑crashing midfielder, netting 12 Serie A goals and earning the division’s MVP award, while finishing 18th in the 2025 Ballon d’Or rankings ahead of Jude Bellingham, Erling Haaland and Michael Olise.

Off the pitch, McTominay has embraced life in Naples with partner Cam Reading, learning Italian and even praising local tomatoes on live TV. Fans have dubbed him ‘McFratm’, and his likeness now adorns murals, flags and a shrine in the city centre after the 2025 title win.
