McInnes' Rangers chase a new signing before Friday clash
Rangers are poised to announce another signing within the next 48 hours, with manager Derek McInnes hinting a deal could be sealed before the club's season‑opening away game at Dundee United on Friday. The Scottish side hopes the addition will strengthen the squad for the campaign ahead.
McInnes teased a second signing by the time his side travel to Dundee United on Friday, stressing the importance of bolstering the team before the opening fixture. He said the club is actively pursuing options and expects to have news within the 48‑hour window.
Belgium midfielder Nicolas Raskin will not feature in the Friday match, as he is only expected back from his break after the World Cup this week. Rangers anticipate transfer interest in the 25‑year‑old and have therefore prepared for his possible departure.
Rangers have already brought in seven new players this summer, but McInnes indicated that a defender and a winger remain priority targets. The club’s recruitment strategy focuses on shoring up the back line and adding width to the attack.
"We are quite hopeful we've got one done at the minute and hopefully we'll have some news on that in the next 48 hours and we're also trying to maybe bring one more in if we can for Friday night," McInnes said, outlining the club’s short‑term objectives.
McInnes lamented the lack of chances created in Sunday's final pre‑season friendly, a goalless draw at home to West Ham United. He emphasized the need for more creativity to serve strikers such as Nadiri, Chermiti, Shankland and Miovski.
Defensively, McInnes feels the squad is "a bit short in terms of numbers" with four games in 12 days. He noted that only five senior defenders were available and that Ross McCrorie's knee issue limited options.
Rangers have signed three defensive midfielders this summer in anticipation of selling Raskin. McInnes added that Nico might be subject to interest and that the club always considered him a potential flight risk after the World Cup.
When asked about imminent outgoings, McInnes mentioned there has been "a wee bit of interest in one or two" players, without naming anyone specifically.
