Mbappé condemns Rudi Garcia's caricature of African teams

Rudi Garcia's statement after the World Cup round of 16 sparked a heated controversy, prompting Kylian Mbappé to defend Senegal and denounce stereotypes about African teams.

The coach's remarks

“We know those teams, they lose their tactical structure towards the end of the match,” Rudi Garcia said following Belgium's victory over Senegal (3‑2 after extra time) on July 1. The comment immediately provoked strong reactions.

Mbappé's reaction

Asked by RFI, the captain of the French team, Kylian Mbappé, lamented that such caricatures persist, recalling that “everyone has caricatures about everyone. Sometimes they are true, sometimes not at all.” He added that playing against African teams remains very difficult, highlighting their competitiveness and growing confidence.

Aware of the impact of his words, the former coach of Lille, Lyon and Marseille posted a mea culpa on social media, stating that his remarks were absolutely not racist.

Several observers, however, criticized the degrading cliché maintained by the former Belgian coach, arguing that it fed a reductive view of African teams.

Mbappé recalled that the French had already faced Senegal (3‑1) in the same tournament, before beating Morocco (2‑0) in the quarter‑finals, emphasizing that every match against African national teams represents a major challenge.
