Mayor Bruls warns Feyenoord fans: no entry if suspects evade capture

On Saturday 5 September, Mayor Hubert Bruls of Nijmegen warned that Feyenoord supporters will not be allowed into the NEC stadium if the perpetrators of the fireworks incident at SC Cambuur are not identified, linking fan safety to the ongoing investigation.

Bruls said the city will bar Rotterdammers away supporters from the NEC match unless the suspects behind the SC Cambuur fireworks are apprehended, emphasizing public safety over fan attendance.

Security concerns linked to fireworks incident

‘This happens in all stadiums, even at my venue De Goffert. It always gets in, and apparently some people let it in,’ Bruls told the audience.

He added, ‘We must act collectively; the first step is to catch the perpetrators. If that fails, away supporters should not be welcome next time. The next Feyenoord away game is in Nijmegen, and I await this week’s investigation results.’

Bruls warned, ‘If by early next week there is no clarity on arrests, Feyenoord fans must stay home and watch on TV. Otherwise the offending guests could simply return to football in two weeks.’

He concluded, ‘How can you allow such behaviour and then continue as normal? Feyenoord players even congratulated the away fans after the match. I will host people in two weeks and need assurance that this troublemaker is not present in the stadium.’

Bruls joined presenter Sam Hagens and Minister of Justice and Security David van Weel on the NPO-programma Goedenavond Nederland to discuss the Leeuwarden fireworks incident and its implications for stadium safety.
