MAYO FC UNCOVERED: Green‑red launch fuels League of Ireland hopes

When they launched the green and red Mayo FC jersey on 24 August 2026 inside Castlebar’s TF Royal Hotel, the exultant mood swept the County for the past month as the club prepares for its first League of Ireland National competition.

League of Ireland football is on the horizon for the first time in this part of the west, but much of the talk was still about Ryan O’Donoghue’s shimmy and Darragh Beirne’s finish. They had waited long enough to talk about such a day.

Opening national league fixture

Mayo FC will host St Francis in their opening National league game next Saturday, giving the newly‑formed side its first senior test on home soil.

Local talent and academy roots

Many of the players who climbed the Hogan Stand steps last month were accomplished junior or juvenile soccer players. O’Donoghue, the beating heart of the team, was an Ireland under‑age international who travelled an hour and a half from Belmullet to train with the Sligo Rovers academy.

Anthony O’Neill, the club’s first senior manager, said the project can create a unique identity for Mayo. “We can build a club that the people of Mayo can identify with,” he explained.

One of the newest clubs, Mayo FC has already signed local star Noe Baba and striker James McGrath, who played for Ballinamallard last season. Former League of Ireland player Gary Armstrong also joins, bringing the squad to 21 players – 17 seniors and four under‑20s.

The club is eyeing loan deals from Sligo Rovers, Galway United and even TU Dublin, as the new third tier offers younger players a taste of senior football.

Mark Duffy, the Fine Gael senator who championed the project, said, “Now we have a chance to keep all these talented young players in Mayo and work with them here.” The launch’s feel‑good factor could help the club build lasting support across the County.
