Mayo All-Ireland star Cillian O'Connor ends inter-county career

Mayo All-Ireland champion Cillian O'Connor announced his retirement from inter-county football on 7 October 2026, ending a glittering career that saw him become the all‑time top championship scorer at 34, lift the Sam Maguire Cup and collect two All‑Stars, seven Connacht titles and two National League crowns.

O'Connor's impact on Mayo

O'Connor's presence was central to Mayo's attacking threat for over a decade. He finished his inter-county career as the all‑time championship top scorer, a record he set at the age of 34. His tally eclipsed Colm Cooper's 352 points and included a 4‑09 haul in the 2020 semi‑final against Tipperary.

The forward's consistency earned him two All‑Stars, seven Connacht championships and two National League crowns. He also collected the Young Footballer of the Year award in both 2011 and 2012. Reflecting on his ethos, O'Connor told Maurice Brosnan, “The first thing always was the inner sanctum of the dressing room…just do your effing job for the guy beside you.”

Memorable moments and records

O'Connor delivered some of Mayo's most dramatic moments, sending the 2016 All‑Ireland final to a replay with a late equaliser and leveling the 2017 final in the 67th minute with a booming right‑foot strike. He also missed a crucial free on Hill 16 in the 2012 final, a reminder of the fine margins he endured. His 4‑09 performance in the 2020 semi‑final remains the highest individual tally in a championship game.

Injuries increasingly limited his involvement, restricting him to just two appearances this year after opting out of the panel in 2025. An Achilles injury forced him out of the 2021 final against Tyrone. Despite these setbacks, he was part of the squad that finally dethroned Kerry to end a 75‑year wait for the Sam Maguire CUP.

Future without the legend

O'Connor confirmed his retirement in an interview with the Irish Examiner, stating that the Sam Maguire triumph earlier this year felt like the right moment to step away. The news appeared across the Sport, Football, Soccer and Extra sections, alongside coverage of Rugby, Golf, the League of Ireland (LOI), Racing, the Upgrade feature, the League, Horse racing, Boxing, Motorsport, Athletics, NFL and NBA, with Live video review, Podcasts and more Stories for the Family audience. Mayo now faces the challenge of replacing a player who contributed over 300 championship points and embodied the team’s spirit. The county will look to emerging talent to fill the scoring gap while honouring O'Connor’s legacy. MAYO supporters will remember his dedication as the club charts its next chapter.
