Max Dean’s Championship return hinges on Millwall or Bolton move

Max Dean’s name may not be a household one among Leeds United supporters, but the 22-year-old striker’s career path has taken a decisive turn after reported interest from Bolton Wanderers and Millwall. The forward, who progressed through the Leeds United academy, never made a senior appearance for the Whites before his departure to MK Dons in 2024.

Dean left Elland Road without a first-team opportunity, but his career has since been rebuilt through consistent performances in lower divisions. His progress has not gone unnoticed, with Football League World reporting that Millwall are among the clubs interested in the striker this summer. A move to either Bolton or Millwall would represent a return to the Championship for Dean, a significant step up from his recent experiences.

The striker’s senior experience to date has been almost exclusively in League Two, where he excelled during the 2023/24 season. His performances earned him a move to Belgium, though his football before that was largely confined to academy level. Since then, he has played in League One, where he showed flashes of potential before his move abroad.

Both Bolton and Millwall could offer environments suited to Dean’s continued development. Bolton are familiar with the demands of competing for promotion, while Millwall have recent experience at a higher level than the recently promoted side. The Lions have built a reputation for developing hungry young players who match their intensity and work ethic, traits Dean shares.

For Leeds, Dean’s progress raises questions about whether he might have deserved a greater opportunity before his departure. He built a reputation as an aggressive striker off the ball and a clinical finisher with it. Breaking into the first team at Elland Road has never been easy, particularly during periods when promotion and Premier League survival took priority over academy development.

Dean’s steady rise since leaving Leeds for MK Dons and then Gent illustrates that different players mature at different rates. Some require regular senior football elsewhere before their potential fully emerges, and his career trajectory appears to support that theory. Leeds will not regret every academy departure, but Dean is one worth monitoring.

Whether Dean ends up at Bolton or Millwall, the move will represent the biggest test of his career to date. Success would demonstrate that his development has continued at an impressive pace and could even reopen discussions about what might have been had he remained at Leeds for longer.

From Leeds’ perspective, there is no bitterness involved, only curiosity. Academy graduates inevitably move on in search of opportunities, and Dean has earned his next step through hard work and perseverance after injury setbacks since joining Gent from Belgium.

If he can make the step-up once again, Leeds supporters may look back on his departure with a mixture of pride and intrigue, wondering whether another former academy prospect has quietly developed into a Championship-calibre striker.
