Mauro Júnior criticises role after Champions League own goal vs Leipzig
Mauro Júnior, captain of PSV, was immediately after the defeat to RB Leipzig (0‑1) extremely critical of his own performance. He stated that the team deserved more and that he had not carried out his duties on the corners properly. This happened in the Champions League that Tuesday evening.
Own responsibility for the conceding goal
The only goal of the match came from Brajan Gruda, who fifteen minutes before the end struck a loose ball from a corner into the net. Mauro explained that he could have done more in that set‑piece situation and that he had not adequately defended the penalty area.
“It was my job to defend the penalty area on corners and I did not do that well here,” the Brazilian said self‑critically. “I could have done better.”
Positive points and outlook
Despite the loss, Mauro emphasized the positive aspects of PSV's play. He felt that the team had had the match under control in parts in the first half and had been stable.
“We were stable. In the first half we had the match under control at times. We have shown good football on this big stage and we must take that into the future,” said the captain.
He urged his team to keep their heads up and focus on the next match, emphasizing the importance of taking chances.
