Mauricio Pochettino keeps England job open as Tuchel remains in charge
Mauricio Pochettino said he would consider the England job only if he becomes free, while Thomas Tuchel continues as England manager after signing a new contract in February 2026 that runs to the end of Euro 2008. Pochettino has been USA manager since September 2024 and extended his deal in August 2026 to the 2030 World Cup.
Current roles and contracts
Thomas Tuchel took charge of England in January 2025 and, following a fresh agreement in February 2026, will remain at the helm through the end of Euro 2008. Mauricio Pochettino, the Argentine, has guided the United States national team since September 2024 and, after his contract expired at the close of the summer World Cup, signed a new four‑year deal in August 2026 that secures his tenure until the 2030 World Cup.
Past ties with Tottenham Hotspur
Pochettino’s first spell at Tottenham Hotspur lasted from 2014 to 2019, during which he oversaw 293 matches, winning 160 and achieving a 54.6 per cent win rate – the third‑best in the club’s 144‑year history. Under his guidance Spurs finished second in the Premier League in 2017, a position that remains their highest for 63 years, and reached both a League Cup final and a Champions League final.

He has repeatedly said the timing has never been right for a return. “When I was free, I never received a contact and then when I was working, I received a contact but I could not make the decision to come back,” he explained, adding that “it was a little bit unlucky”.
Future possibilities and quotes
When asked if he would take charge of Tottenham should they fall to the Championship, Pochettino answered, “Yes, of course. Tottenham … it’s the only club that I am always open to help, in whatever division.” He also reiterated his openness to the England job, stating, “If I am free, I will consider it, but not now.”
Beyond England and the USA, Pochettino spent 18 months at Paris Saint-Germain after his January 2021 appointment, winning the Ligue 1 title and the French Cup.
