Matthäus sees first suitors for the failed Liverpool‑Wirtz

Florian Wirtz has yet to make a breakthrough at Liverpool, and Lothar Matthäus is already naming potential suitors. The 23‑year‑old German was again substituted early in the 0‑3 loss to Manchester City, further fueling the debate about his future.

Wirtz performance and media criticism

Jamie Carragher, former Liverpool legend and TV pundit, sharply criticised the transfer: „This transfer does not work and has not worked so far. Wirtz playing on the number ten every week must stop. Liverpool has given him enough chances. He must be taken out of the squad.“

Lothar Matthäus, on the other hand, assesses the situation more soberly. In his Sky column he stresses that in England „overall one is satisfied with his performances“, but a top‑flight defeat by 0‑3 brings „considerable headwind“ from the media.

Team problems and possible ways out

Matthäus explains that Wirtz still works well in the German national team, where he is sought after by his teammates – similar to his earlier days at Leverkusen. At Liverpool, however, they are looking for other players, such as Dominik Szoboszlai or Alexander Isak, which highlights the problem of the former Leverkusen player.

The former record international sees a departure from Liverpool becoming increasingly likely. He warns that constant criticism is destroying the German's enjoyment of the game and that a meeting of all parties is necessary to find a solution.

As possible destinations, Matthäus mentions clubs in Spain that would be interested, as well as Chelsea in England, where Wirtz's former coach Xabi Alonso is employed. A return to the Bundesliga, particularly to Bayern Munich, Matthäus considers unlikely, because Munich's attack is already filled with players such as Harry Kane, Bukayo Olise, Luis Diaz, Jamal Musiala and Sergej Gnaby.
