Matthäus praises Klopp's double squad and sees a difference with Nagelsmann
Lothar Matthäus praises Jürgen Klopp for the unconventional approach of his first DFB‑squad and already sees a clear difference to Julian Nagelsmann. The record national player is enthusiastic about the split into two squads with a total of 44 players, which allows Klopp to personally assess character and behavior.
Two‑Squad Concept as a Solution
As Matthäus explains in the interview with RTL and Sky Sport, he considers the split into two squads a very good solution. Through the concept, Klopp gets the opportunity to get to know many more players personally and not only assess their sporting quality.
The former international emphasizes that it is mainly about the style of the new national team coach, which takes both the sporting and the human component into account. Therefore, he can understand why Klopp has also nominated less well‑known names such as Felix Keidel, Bambase Conte or Mika Baur.
Matthäus criticises the notion that a coach can assess players solely from observation. In direct exchange, Klopp can convey his ideas, hold conversations and at the same time recognise how individual professionals behave within the team environment.
Matthäus demands clear support from Klopp for Kimmich
Matthäus found Klopp's press conference especially strong, calling it one of the best he has ever seen. He praised the clear messages to players, fans and the whole football nation.
Klopp's previous working style also appeals to him: The national team coach regularly attends matches, observes training sessions and appears overall very present. This presence clearly distinguishes him from Julian Nagelsmann.
Tresoldi thanks Klopp but delays the choice between Germany and Italy
Compared to Nagelsmann, Matthäus perceives Klopp as more active and closer to the team environment. For the record national player, this very approach is decisive if Germany is to become successful again as quickly as possible.
