Matthäus declares Bisseck more than an Ersatz for Germany

Yann Aurel Bisseck has rejoined the German national team, yet former world‑cup winner Lothar Matthäus insists the 25‑year‑old is far more than a simple replacement. While Jürgen Klopp’s squad already boasts strong centre‑backs, the former captain sees a genuine opportunity for Bisseck to cement his place.

Matthäus backs Bisseck after Inter spell

After a lengthy absence, Bisseck returned to the DFB roster, having last been named in March 2025. His performances for Inter Milan have impressed Matthäus, who wrote in his Sky column that the defender is “overwhelmingly excellent” in Italy.

Matthäus added that Bisseck’s recent contract extension at Inter underlines his rising importance. He recalled hearing positive remarks about the player during a visit to Milan just a week ago.

Klopp’s initial squad selection still pits Bisseck against established names such as Jonathan Tah and Nico Schlotterbeck. Matthäus, however, believes the competition is healthy and highlights additional options like Max Rosenfelder and Josha Vagnoman.

The defender aims to translate his Italian form into the national shirt, with upcoming fixtures against the Netherlands and Greece providing the first real chance to prove his worth.

Matthäus concludes that Bisseck is no longer a peripheral figure but a player capable of influencing Germany’s defensive line in the coming internationals.
