Mateta pushes FIFA over Crystal Palace contract dispute
French striker Jean-Philippe Mateta, 29, has escalated his contract dispute with Premier League side Crystal Palace to FIFA, challenging the remaining ten months of a deal that runs until June 2027. The move follows a tribunal loss and comes as the club navigates a summer of transfer speculation.
Contract origins and activation
The Frenchman first joined Crystal Palace on an 18‑month loan from Mainz in January 2021. A year later the loan was made permanent when he signed a four‑and‑a‑half year contract that included an optional extra 12 months. Palace exercised that option in 2024, extending his stay.
Dispute and legal proceedings
Mateta is contesting the optional extra year, arguing that the remaining ten months of his contract should not be enforceable. The dispute centres on a clause that adds a year to a deal originally set to expire in June 2027.
A Premier League tribunal held midway through last season ruled against Mateta, leaving the contract binding according to talkSPORT. The tribunal’s decision confirmed that the club’s activation of the option was valid.
Following the unfavorable tribunal outcome, Mateta has taken his case to FIFA, Getty reports. The French striker hopes the global governing body will review the contractual terms.
Aston Villa are understood to have enquired about Mateta this summer, viewing him as a potential addition to their attacking line‑up. Villa’s interest comes as they also monitor the availability of other forwards.
Villa’s priority target remains Nicolas Jackson, while they have also pursued Leon Goretzka, a free agent after leaving Bayern, and face the possible loss of Ollie Watkins to Al Hilal. Watkins is open to joining the Saudi Pro League side after six seasons at Villa.
The FIFA review will decide whether Mateta’s contract can be terminated before its June 2027 expiry, but the binding nature of the existing agreement presents a significant obstacle. Until a ruling is issued, any transfer move remains uncertain.
