Mastantuono’s loan to Fiorentina: a gamble on a 19-year-old’s unfulfilled promise
Franco Mastantuono has completed a loan move from Real Madrid to Fiorentina for the 2026/27 season. The deal was finalised after weeks of negotiations between the clubs and the player’s representatives, with the 19-year-old Argentine set to wear the Viola shirt next term.
Born on 14 August 2007 in Azul, Argentina, Mastantuono is a left-footed midfielder whose career has accelerated rapidly since joining River Plate’s youth system in 2019. He turned professional in 2023 and made his senior debut in January 2024, playing in a 1-1 draw with Argentinos Juniors. A week later, on 8 February 2024, he scored his first senior goal in a 3-0 Copa Argentina win over Excursionistas, becoming the youngest goalscorer in River Plate history.
His time at River Plate yielded 36 appearances, five goals and seven assists across all competitions. In the summer of 2025, Real Madrid paid around €60 million to sign him on a six-year contract. However, his first season in Madrid brought limited game time; he featured in 35 matches and scored three goals across all competitions, a return that saw him overlooked for Argentina’s 2026 World Cup squad.
Mastantuono made his full international debut for Argentina on 5 June 2025, starting in a 1-0 win away to Chile. At 17 years and 296 days old, he became the youngest player to debut for the Albiceleste in an official match, underlining his standing as one of world football’s most exciting prospects.
At Fiorentina, Mastantuono is expected to feature prominently under head coach Fabio Grosso. The club has guaranteed him continuity and minutes, positioning him as a key creative outlet in a 4-3-3 system. He is likely to operate as a right-sided midfielder, a role that could accentuate his offensive instincts and make him a valuable fantasy asset.
Tuttofantacalcio’s assessment suggests Mastantuono is a high-upside option who could be slotted in as a third midfielder in fantasy teams. They advise caution: at 18, he remains unproven in Serie A and will need time to adapt. The loan to Florence may offer the platform he lacked at Real Madrid, where his development stalled amid limited opportunities.
The contrast is stark. Real Madrid’s investment and high expectations collided with limited playing time and inconsistent output. Fiorentina’s project, by contrast, is built around giving young talent the space to thrive. Whether Mastantuono can recapture his best form remains the central question for both club and player.
