Marseille face a new loss: Derek Cornelius hospitalized in Toronto
The central defender of Olympique de Marseille, Derek Cornelius, was rushed to a Toronto hospital after injuring his lower body during a training session with the Canadian national team, according to the official announcement from Canada Soccer on Wednesday evening. His absence comes as the club is severely lacking defensive cover.
A injury that adds to financial constraints
The 28‑year‑old, who has already made four appearances for OM this season – three Ligue 1 matches and one Europa League match for a total of 93 minutes under Bruno Genesio – was considered a backup behind Nayef Aguerd, CJ Egan‑Riley and Geoffrey Kondogbia. His hospitalization comes as club owner Frank McCourt imposed a “severe austerity cure” this summer, reducing bench depth.
National team context and health risks
The Canada national team statement says Cornelius’s injury occurred “without contact” during training in Toronto. Canada Soccer’s medical staff says the defender is receiving care and further assessment. Moreover, the text notes that the FIFA virus could affect squads through an unprecedentedly long international break, raising additional concerns for players already vulnerable.
Before his move to Canada, Cornelius had been loaned the previous season to Glasgow Rangers, where he logged 14 matches, scored a goal and provided an assist. He has 48 caps for Canada and one international goal.
In Ligue 1, his playing time has been limited: 7 minutes against Strasbourg, 17 minutes against Paris FC and 2 minutes against Rennes. He was, however, in the starting XI against Besiktas in the Coupe de France, where he left the field in the 67th minute.
The Marseille club will now have to reassess its defensive options, especially as bench depth remains very limited. Genesio’s upcoming training sessions will be crucial to determine whether other players can fill the void left by Cornelius.
