Mark McKenzie's American challenge, from the FC to MLS
Toulouse FC announced on Wednesday the transfer of 27-year-old centre-back Mark McKenzie to Philadelphia Union, sixth in the MLS standings, with a departure scheduled for the beginning of 2027. The player, trained in Pennsylvania and with 48 appearances between 2018 and 2020, will leave Toulouse after a full season in Europe.
A transatlantic challenge for the defender
After leaving the United States, McKenzie signed in 2021 with KRC Genk, a Belgian club playing in Europe. He spent three seasons there before joining Toulouse FC, an Occitan club, coming from Belgium.
Under the direction of Carles Martínez Novell, the defender was a pillar of TFC before the coach's departure this summer. The new Danish manager, Jens Askou, gave him the full possible minutes during the first five league matches.
The transfer announcement was preceded by a playful reference: “From Bigflo & Oli to Lil Uzi Vert”. This nod highlights the contrast between the music scene and the player's career, now headed toward MLS.
McKenzie, trained at the Pennsylvania club, made 48 appearances between 2018 and 2020 before heading to Europe. At 27, he will join Philadelphia Union at the beginning of 2027, crossing the Atlantic.
Philadelphia Union, ranked sixth in the MLS, will benefit from the experience of Toulouse’s centre-back as soon as he arrives. In the city of Philadelphia, McKenzie will also have to contend with the strong media presence of basketball, where figures such as Joel Embiid, Jaylen Brown and LeBron James dominate attention.
