Maresca’s task: reviving Foden’s spark for Manchester City’s future

Manchester City have acted to plug a creative void after two demanding seasons for Phil Foden, confirming earlier this week that the England international has signed a new contract extending to the summer of 2030, a deal designed to restore his dazzling best for the club’s upcoming campaigns.

City are backing Foden to return to his dazzling best after two tough and trying seasons for him. When Enzo Maresca faced the media yesterday for the first time as Manchester City manager, he said he is aiming to help Phil Foden return to his best form and added that it is his duty to do so.

“I just want to help Phil to be the Phil we all want.”

“First of all for him because he needs to enjoy football and second because I know how good he is.”

“Phil in a good shape and mood, he can win games.”

If Maresca can get the best out of Foden it will be exactly what Manchester City need, and a big variable over the 2026-27 season is which Phil Foden they will get – whether the 2023-24 Player of the Season returns to consistency or continues to be erratic. That factor will affect the FA Cup and Carabao Cup campaigns.

Maresca has worked with Foden previously, giving him a template to guide the England international. He says he knows what makes Foden tick.

If he can succeed, it will help shape Manchester City into a formidable unit. It will also ensure Foden remains a key match‑winner for the FA Cup and Carabao Cup holders while enjoying his football once again.
