Maresca’s mission: Man City Foden must rediscover his former self

Enzo Maresca says his personal mission at Manchester City is to help Phil Foden return to his best level. The successor of Pep Guardiola views it as his duty to get the England midfielder back on top after a season of bench time and a missed WK with Engeland.

Maresca told reporters, "I want to help him become the Phil we once knew and that we want to see again. He must enjoy football again." The Italian manager stressed his commitment to restoring Foden’s confidence.

"I know how good Phil is. When he is in form, he can win games for us," Maresca added, highlighting the striker‑midfielder’s impact potential for Man City.

He recalled Foden’s “incredible” 2022/23 season, when Manchester City secured the Treble, underscoring the player’s previous high‑level contributions.

Maresca also referenced the 2023/24 Premier League Speler of the Year award, noting that Foden earned that accolade before his recent struggles.

The coach admitted that Foden now finds it difficult to replicate past performances, but insisted it is his responsibility to assist the player. "He comes from here and is a supporter of the club," Maresca said, emphasizing his personal connection.

Overall, Maresca’s clear objective is to see Foden regain his form, enjoy the game, and once again become a decisive factor for Manchester City’s success.
