Marcos Jorente claims Anfield Champions League scoring record
CL・『アンフィールド』での最多得点者に！ Marcos Jorente, the Atletico Madrid midfielder, became the all‑time Champions League top scorer at Liverpool’s Anfield after his fifth goal at the ground, overtaking Karim Benzema. The record was set in the group‑stage clash on 9 September, when his early strike gave Atletico Madrid a 1‑0 lead before Liverpool turned the game around to win 2‑1.
The 1‑0 lead came from Jorente’s early strike, but Liverpool equalised and later secured a 2‑1 victory. The defeat gave Atletico a disappointing start to their quest for a first major trophy this season.
Anfield scoring record
Jorente’s fifth goal at Anfield lifts him to sole top of the Champions League tally for the venue, overtaking Karim Benzema who had four. He has now scored ten goals in the competition overall, half of which were recorded at Liverpool’s ground. The 31‑year‑old had announced his retirement from the Spain national team just before the match.
The Anfield visits mark his third appearance at the stadium under Diego Simeone’s guidance. His previous trips were the second‑leg round‑of‑16 in the 2019‑20 campaign and the league phase last season. The 2019‑20 encounter is remembered for his two‑goal effort that helped dismantle the fortress.
Atletico Madrid's next league test
Atletico Madrid’s next fixture comes on 13 September, when they host Real Sociedad in La Liga round five. Simeone will be looking to restore confidence after the opening‑day setback. A positive result could revive their aspirations for a historic season.
The Spanish side entered the campaign hoping for a ‘big‑year’ first trophy, but the early loss underscores the challenge ahead. Jorente’s record‑breaking performance, however, provides a bright spot for the squad.
If the midfield can replicate his Anfield impact at home, Atletico may yet turn the tide in the weeks to come. Supporters will be watching closely to see whether the veteran can inspire a turnaround.
