Marcel Sabitzer puts his international career on pause
Marcel Sabitzer, a 32-year-old Austrian midfielder playing for Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga, announced that he is temporarily suspending his international career, putting his Austrian national team duties on hold where he has amassed 102 caps and 27 goals, after an intense season.
With 102 caps and 27 goals, Sabitzer is among the most experienced players in the Austrian national team. His contribution both offensively and defensively has been decisive over the years.
European Club Career
Before joining Borussia Dortmund, he played for Rapid Vienna, then RB Salzburg, before signing with Manchester United. These spells enriched his experience before settling in Germany.
The midfielder justifies his break by a physical overload, claiming to have played the equivalent of three consecutive seasons. The load comes especially from the 2026 World Cup, where Austria was eliminated 0‑3 by Spain, as well as the Club World Cup, which added several matches to his schedule.
Prospects of Returning to the National Team
A full review will be conducted early next year with manager Ralf Rangnick to assess a possible return for the Euro 2028 qualifiers, which will be played in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Sabitzer said he will monitor his physical condition before making a final decision.
