Manuel Neuer makes Bayern history by breaking Müller’s record

Manuel Neuer has written another extraordinary chapter in his Bayern Munich career: his appearance in the Champions League match against Bodø/Glimt allowed him to break the club record held by Thomas Müller. The 40‑year‑old goalkeeper was in the starting lineup and thereby reached 18 different Champions League seasons, overtaking Thomas Müller, who had 17.

Record Break and Season Numbers

With his appearance in the Champions League match against Bodø/Glimt, Neuer reached 18 different Champions League seasons wearing Bayern Munich’s shirt. This overtook the club record held by Thomas Müller, which stood at 17 editions. In total, the 40‑year‑old goalkeeper has already made 139 appearances in European competitions for the club. The competition in which he set the record was the Champions League.

Neuer has been playing for Bayern since 2011 and previously featured 22 times for Schalke 04 in the Champions League. Despite being 40 years old, he remains contractually bound to the club until June 2027. He emphasizes that he is not thinking about shortening his career.

Goals and Succession

“I approach this season with the thought of achieving everything that is possible. I know that with this squad, this coaching staff and our team spirit, everything is possible,” Neuer said. He added that a third Champions League triumph would be of great significance for him.

The club is simultaneously preparing Jonas Urbig gradually for the role of successor. Nevertheless, Neuer remains firmly determined to chase the most important titles until the end of his contract.

Through the record break, Neuer wrote another chapter in the club’s history and cemented his status as a Bayern legend. His shirt now bears the highest number of appearances in the competitions, making him a mainstay in the Champions League arena.

The contrast between the historic record and the still‑unmet goals shows that Neuer both shapes the past and actively shapes the future. For Bayern, his continued involvement means both sporting continuity and preparation for the next generation.
