While Roberto Mancini laid the foundation for Manchester City's current success over four years, the financial ruling announced on Friday casts a new light on his tenure – at the same time his comeback with the Squadra Azzurra faltered with a 0-2 defeat to Belgium.

From 2009 to 2013, Roberto Mancini built structures at Manchester City that later contributed to the club's major successes. His work is now being reassessed in the context of the recent verdict.

Following the guilty verdict on Friday, which concerns financial violations, his time at City is seen in a different light. During that period, a second contract is said to have existed, which is still being debated.

Roberto Mancini is once again head coach of the Italian national team and is set to lead the Squadra Azzurra into a new era. However, the planned comeback faltered with a 0-2 defeat to Belgium.

Afterwards Mancini said: “I don’t believe Manchester City was found guilty, quite the opposite. That is not an issue that concerns me, but it is nothing new. Manchester City is not guilty, and regarding the double contract, that is not my problem, but, if anything, theirs.”

Der Spiegel reported that Mancini allegedly received, in addition to a salary of €1.5 million, another €2.03 million under a separate agreement.

After the verdict, the exact sanction remains unclear, as does the decision on Manchester City's appeal.
