Mancini brings out the Italian tenacity in the match against France

Italy, under Roberto Mancini, displayed, in the match against France, a more aggressive style of play, described as “sabre”, without resorting to the traditional “foil”. Goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and defender Alessandro Bastoni stood out, while the team showed solidity and the ability to endure.

The protagonists of the performance

Donnarumma provided safety between the posts, while Bastoni led the defence with authority. In attack, Pio Esposito proved invaluable in the support play, creating space and chances. Frattesi contributed with incisive runs, and Vergara injected fresh energy upon entering the field, making the Italians more dangerous on the counter‑attack.

Despite Olise’s masterpiece goal, the team did not collapse, maintaining defensive compactness. Mancini said: “Results change opinions”, praising the ability to give little to Olise and Dembélé. He added: “We defended and attacked as a team, a very positive evening.”

The first‑leg group stage has altered the perception of the Italian national team, shifting from a dramatic scenario after the 0‑2 loss to Belgium to a more relaxed situation. The victory in Turkey and the draw against the Bleus have eased the atmosphere.

There are still two weeks to finish in style, seeking victory against Turkey in Bologna. The upcoming fixture in Bologna represents the last chance to consolidate the progress shown against France.
