Manchester United stick with Carrick as INEOS backs his future

Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed an update on Michael Carrick’s future at Manchester United after the 1‑0 loss to Manchester City, noting the club sit on four points from four Premier League games and that owner‑group INEOS remain willing to give the manager more time.

Carrick’s appointment and past success

Carrick earned the permanent Manchester United job after a spell as interim boss, during which he guided the side to a third‑place finish and secured Champions League qualification.

Current challenges and INEOS backing

This season the club aim to compete on four fronts, yet their start to the 2026/27 campaign has been disappointing, highlighted by a 1‑0 defeat to ten‑man Manchester City at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Having collected only four points from their opening four Premier League matches, Manchester United now face pressure to secure a win over Fulham next weekend.

A report ahead of the Manchester derby confirmed INEOS are currently willing to give the head coach additional time, and Romano later said the club’s plan is to stick with Carrick despite the obvious disappointment.

“Man Utd absolutely remain convinced that the future will be bright under Michael Carrick,” Romano said on his YouTube channel. “Manchester United wanted to add a left‑back in the summer window but did not sign until convinced of the right option.”

Carrick himself has repeatedly stressed confidence, telling the club “We are going to do very well, I am confident, this team is good” and insisting the squad can improve in the weeks and months after the break.
