Manchester United risk seven‑figure loss as JJ Gabriel eyes a move

JJ Gabriel told Manchester United on 15 September that he wants to join a new club, a request that shocked United officials who had not anticipated his departure. The teenage attacking midfielder, already linked with Real Madrid and Barcelona, is now expected to command a fee of at least £8.5 million.

Why United are prepared to lose him

United have offered Gabriel a new scholarship in an attempt to raise the compensation they would receive. If the player leaves under the terms of his Irish passport eligibility, the club would only collect between £300,000 and £350,000.

Reports suggest the club could instead secure a larger sum by extending Gabriel’s contract while promising a transfer next year. Such an arrangement would raise the total payment to the seven‑figure level.

What the fee includes and who is involved

The projected £8.5 million package would cover a transfer payment to United, compensation for Gabriel’s family, a three‑year salary of over €1 million (£850,000) per season and agent fees. Agent Ali Barat is handling the teenager’s negotiations.

Gabriel and his family feel Michael Carrick’s side have broken promises about first‑team opportunities, prompting the September request. They have long dreamed of a move to Barcelona, travelling there regularly and training with a private coach after the exit request was submitted.

Real Madrid and Barcelona are understood to be leading the chase, with Bayern Munich and Paris Saint‑Germain also mentioned as interested parties. Chelsea have already been rejected by the player, who prefers a European titan.

United may consider legal action if they believe Gabriel has been poached for a reduced fee. Meanwhile, Nottingham Forest are reportedly determined to prevent a top star from joining United, adding another layer to the transfer saga.
