Manchester United push for January Mitchell deal as Palace speed talks

Manchester United push for January Mitchell deal as Palace speed talks

Manchester United boss Michael Carrick is watching the January market closely as Crystal Palace accelerate talks to secure left‑back Tyrick Mitchell on a long‑term deal. Mitchell’s current contract runs out at the end of the season, with Palace holding a 12‑month extension option, and United believe they could swoop in once the deadline approaches.

Palace accelerate Mitchell talks

Crystal Palace have confirmed they are “accelerating plans” to bind Mitchell to a multi‑year contract, aiming to keep the 27‑year‑old at Selhurst Park. The club’s chairman Steve Parish admitted there are “one or two” players they are keen to lock down, with Mitchell listed as the first priority. Palace’s offer is reported to sit in the £20‑25 million range.

Premier League clubs line up interest

Manchester United are optimistic they could sign Mitchell in January, according to a TEAMtalk update earlier this week. The move would address a clear need for Carrick, who faces uncertainty over Luke Shaw’s future – the 31‑year‑old is also set to become a free agent at season’s end and United are only prepared to offer a short‑term extension. Liverpool are also monitoring the situation, valuing Mitchell’s homegrown status for squad registration and seeking depth on the left as Milos Kerkez’s form wavers. Chelsea have entered the race, with reports linking them to the £25m defender.

Mitchell’s Premier League pedigree

Mitchell has been a first‑team regular at Palace since 2020, amassing 250 appearances and contributing 26 goals, including a recent brace against Fulham. The two‑time capped England international brings proven reliability and league experience, qualities that United, Liverpool and Chelsea all consider valuable. His contract uncertainty and the manageable fee make him a sensible winter acquisition compared with higher‑priced targets.

For United, securing Mitchell would provide an immediate, experienced left‑back without the adaptation period a marquee signing might require. The club could avoid further reshuffling at left‑back, stabilise the back line and free up resources for other areas. With the January window approaching, the race for Mitchell is set to intensify.
