Manchester United paid double for Luke Shaw, reveals Les Reed
Manchester United paid more than double the expected fee for Southampton left‑back Luke Shaw in 2014, handing the Red Devils a £30 million transfer that far exceeded the £12‑15 million estimates given by Southampton’s finance director and chief executive, former Southampton chief Les Reed revealed.
United saw Shaw as a top European prospect and a strategic asset, prompting them to outbid multiple Premier League rivals. The £30m deal was hailed as a coup for the Red Devils, securing one of the continent’s most highly‑rated teenage left‑backs. Reed described the negotiation as having "pulled United's pants down."
Reed recounted the talks during an appearance on the Fozcast podcast, noting a meeting with Manchester United’s Ed Woodward. Back at Southampton he disclosed the fee to the club’s finance director, who guessed £12 million, and to the chief executive, who guessed £15 million. Reed then revealed the true amount – £30 million – more than double the expectations.

The Shaw transfer remains Southampton’s most lucrative academy sale to date, having risen from the club’s youth system to a first‑team regular at St Mary’s as a teenager. During his eight‑year stint as Vice‑Chairman, Reed oversaw the departures of Alex Oxlade‑Chamberlain, Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren, Calum Chambers, Morgan Schneiderlin, Sadio Mané and Virgil van Dijk, which together generated nearly £250 million for the Saints. Reed highlighted the deal as a defining moment that proved the club could secure exceptional value despite limited resources.
Since arriving, Shaw has become a key figure for Manchester United and the England national team, earning recognition as one of Europe’s finest left‑backs. However, his career has been repeatedly disrupted by injuries, resulting in fewer than 13 Premier League appearances in five of his twelve seasons at Old Trafford.
Now 31, Shaw is in the final year of his United contract and is expected to leave the club next summer, with no discussions over a new deal currently underway. Michael Carrick’s side are actively seeking long‑term replacements, identifying Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall as a priority target.
The deal remains a landmark for Man in the Premier League. The Shaw transfer is cited as a landmark Premier League deal, illustrating how shrewd negotiation can transform a club’s financial trajectory even without elite spending power.
