Manchester United must go aggressive as Mount injury exposes gaps

Manchester United’s pre‑season has sounded an alarm: with Mason Mount sidelined by a hamstring injury just before the transfer window closes and no viable left‑back alternative, Michael Carrick’s side cannot afford to wait and must move aggressively to plug two critical squad gaps.

United held European champions Paris Saint‑Germain to a 1‑1 draw in Gothenburg, a result that masked early frailties. PSG struck after 101 seconds through Ibrahim Mbaye, and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia forced Tom Heaton into a palm, while Mount withdrew after clutching his foot.

The injury to Mount has sharpened the focus on a midfield rebuild, with United having entered the summer planning for three new midfielders. Andrey Santos, signed from Chelsea for £50 million, has been the standout in pre‑season, and Youri Tielemans, arriving from Monaco for £35 million, could prove a shrewd acquisition after a brief bench cameo.

Mount’s own words before his injury reflected confidence, saying after United’s 5‑0 win over Rosenborg, “I feel strong and ready to go… I know we’ve got a few weeks more games left and a few more weeks to really work at stuff but I feel good.”

Left‑back depth remains United’s other glaring weakness; Luke Shaw, the only orthodox option, started every Premier League game last season, but no backup exists. Patrick Dorgu, listed as a defender, has never featured there under Carrick and is viewed internally as a winger, leaving the position exposed if Shaw were injured post‑deadline.

The hierarchy’s top target, Lewis Hall, has seen Newcastle United reject two approaches this summer, while academy product Harry Amass has been told his best route to minutes lies elsewhere. United’s total of 40 games last season – the fewest in a single campaign since 1914‑15 – highlights the need for squad depth ahead of expected European and cup runs.

Amad Diallo has provided a bright spot, with his pressing and recovery against PSG leading directly to Bryan Mbeumo’s equaliser, his third goal in two games. “We need to keep building fitness,” Diallo said. “We have a big season coming and I hope we can win trophies this season.”

Carrick’s side has shown tactical bravery, deploying a high press with up to six players in the final third against PSG, and experimenting with Shea Lacey as a No10 alongside Mbeumo to add flexibility. With the window closing, the transfer market must now match the ambition on the pitch, and inaction is not an option.
