Manchester United eye free‑agent left‑back as Romano flags him a watch

Manchester United eye free‑agent left‑back as Romano flags him a watch

A left‑back who will become a free agent at the end of the season has given his consent to join Manchester United, and transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has labelled the German international as “one to watch”. The move would see the player arrive on a free transfer in the summer.

United have outlined an ambition to bring in at least three new defenders in 2027. The Red Devils would have preferred to start the overhaul this summer, according to the club’s transfer strategy.

United's pursuit of left‑backs

Man Utd made overtures towards Newcastle’s Lewis Hall, but the Magpies declined to negotiate after already selling Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon. Hall subsequently signed fresh terms at St. James’ Park, calling the decision a “no‑brainer”. The refusal forces United to look elsewhere for a partner for Luke Shaw.

With Shaw’s future still uncertain, United have turned their attention to RB Leipzig’s David Raum, a 28‑year‑old German left‑back. TEAMtalk reported that the player has given the Red Devils a green light to join.

Raum's potential move

MAN UTD have been linked with the German, and our insider Fraser Fletcher suggested Raum could be signed for around £30 million in January, although his contract expires at the end of the current campaign, making a free‑agency exit more likely. The German international captained Leipzig ahead of the 2025/26 season and has supplied 28 assists over the past three campaigns.

Romano, speaking on his Here He Go podcast, described Raum as “one to watch” for summer 2027, noting that several top clubs are monitoring the situation. “Because there are several top clubs around Europe looking at left‑backs. David Raum has international experience doing very well for Red Bull Leipzig,” he said.

Leipzig are said to be preparing contract talks with Raum and his representatives in the coming months, but the presence of Manchester United among his suitors could tempt the captain to reject a new deal. Should Raum move, United would add a solid, experienced left‑back to challenge Shaw for the starting berth.

In summary, the free‑agent left‑back’s consent to join Manchester United opens the door for a summer acquisition, while the parallel interest in David Raum highlights United’s broader strategy to revamp their defence. Both the player and the Red Devils stand to benefit if the negotiations conclude favourably.
