Manchester United could add Ballon d’Or winner Benzema to boost attack

Manchester United have been urged to consider a surprise signing of former Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema, now a free agent after departing Al‑Hilal. Rio Ferdinand believes the Ballon d’Or winner could give Michael Carrick an extra option in the final third as United seek more experience and depth.

Striking options under pressure

United have struggled to find consistency at centre‑forward this season. Benjamin Sesko’s fitness problems have limited his involvement, while Joshua Zirkzee has slipped down the pecking order. Matheus Cunha has been pushed into a more advanced role despite being better suited to operating behind the main striker.

Ferdinand argues that an experienced number nine could provide a reliable focal point and help younger attackers develop. He sees Benzema as the ideal profile, capable of anchoring the line while mentoring emerging talent.

Benzema’s pedigree and fit

The Frenchman is a former Ballon d’Or winner and remains an accomplished goalscorer with extensive experience at the highest level. He netted ten goals in twelve league appearances for Al‑Hilal before leaving the Saudi club.

A move would be a short‑term solution rather than a long‑term investment, but Ferdinand believes the 38‑year‑old could still add significant value. Benzema could share responsibilities with Sesko, offering the Slovenian valuable guidance during a crucial stage of his development.

Ferdinand also mentioned Danny Welbeck as another experienced forward who could have strengthened United’s options. He told the Sun: “Welbeck springs to mind, obviously, so does Benzema. Two players I feel would have added huge value to the forward line that we have.”

It remains to be seen whether United will explore the free‑agent market for attacking reinforcements. With Carrick still searching for greater consistency in the final third, an experienced striker could prove useful as the season progresses.

If United act on Ferdinand’s suggestion, the squad would gain depth and veteran insight, potentially stabilising their forward play for the remaining fixtures.
