Manchester United battle to reverse JJ Gabriel’s exit request

Manchester United have been told that 15‑year‑old attacker JJ Gabriel has sent a formal notice to cancel his registration at Old Trafford with immediate effect, and the club say they have not given up on persuading him to make a U‑turn.

Gabriel’s request and contractual constraints

The Telegraph Gabriel told the club he wants to leave the Premier League side, and that he has a contract running until the end of the season, with a senior debut expected tomorrow night. Clubs cannot offer a professional contract until a player turns 17, and scholarship agreements cannot be signed until the age of 16, which for Gabriel will be on 6 October. United therefore retain the right to challenge his request to cancel his registration.

Because the registration cannot simply be cancelled, the club maintains that the situation is rectifiable given the remaining time on his contract. The Red Devils were described as “shocked” by the teenager’s desire to become a free agent.

Club’s response and veteran opinions

Ryan Giggs, a Manchester United legend, praised Gabriel as “a generational talent” and stressed that the youngster needs regular minutes, saying, “You need to play games… he’s at the right club.” He added that former teammates Michael Carrick, Darren Fletcher and Jonny Evans are among the experienced figures surrounding the teenager.

During a Rio Ferdinand Presents segment, Ferdinand noted his observations of Gabriel training with Carrick’s side, prompting Giggs to reply, “That sounds like Wayne, doesn’t it? Just give me the ball.” Social‑media posts from BBC reporter Simon Stone and journalist Sam Cohen on 15 September echoed Man Utd’s optimism, stating that United have not given up hope of turning the situation round.

The club continues to seek a U‑turn, but with Gabriel’s formal notice already submitted, the outcome remains uncertain and will likely be decided in the coming days.
