Manchester United and Liverpool clash over Dortmund midfielder Felix Nmecha

Manchester United and Liverpool are both circling Borussia Dortmund midfielder Felix Nmecha as the winter window approaches, each hoping to out‑maneuver the other for the German international whose contract runs until June 2030. United have already opened talks, while Liverpool see the 26‑year‑old as a fallback if their bid for Bournemouth’s Alex Scott stalls.

United’s persistent pursuit

Man Utd have maintained a steady interest in Nmecha, and have made contact to assess options ahead of the January deadline. The club view the midfielder as a long‑term solution in the Premier League, valuing his versatility and energy in the centre of the park.

Liverpool’s alternative plan

Liverpool’s interest is described as a contingency, with sources confirming Nmecha could become a target should their primary pursuit not materialise. The Merseyside side are weighing the prospect alongside other admirers such as Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur.

Beyond the English clubs, Newcastle United, Manchester City and Arsenal have also monitored Nmecha over the past year, highlighting the breadth of Premier League attention on the Dortmund talent.

Born in Hamburg, Nmecha spent more than a decade in the Manchester City academy before establishing himself in the Bundesliga with Wolfsburg and later Borussia Dortmund. His German international status and experience in both boxes have bolstered his reputation.

Under head coach Niko Kovač, Nmecha remains a central figure in Dortmund’s long‑term plans, having extended his deal to June 2030 earlier this year. The club’s sporting director, Ole Book, has repeatedly downplayed any imminent sale.

Dortmund have set a release clause of €80 million (£67.4 million) that only activates in the summer of 2027, while the club’s valuation is frequently cited in the €90‑100 million range (up to £84.2 million). No active clause can be triggered in January.

For now, the midfielder is expected to stay at Signal Iduna Park, aiming to help Dortmund compete on multiple fronts, with any realistic transfer more likely to materialise at the end of the season rather than in the immediate weeks.
