Manchester City Women reveal quadriceps injury sidelines Risa Shimizu
Manchester City Women announced on the 20th that defender Risa Shimizu, 30, has been ruled out by a quadriceps injury. The club said the problem explains why she has been an unused substitute for the first three matches of the 2026‑27 season.
Shimizu started at Nippon TV Tokyo Verdy Beleza before moving permanently to West Ham Women in the summer of 2022, where she was a regular for two seasons. She joined Manchester City Women in July 2024 after a ruptured right‑knee anterior cruciate ligament at the Paris 2024 Olympics required surgery. She returned in August 2025 and was loaned to Liverpool, playing 20 matches.
The club confirmed Shimizu is currently rehabilitating with the medical team and that her recovery is progressing well. A statement on the official website reads: “Everyone at Manchester City wishes Risa’s recovery from the bottom of our hearts.” Images from Getty illustrate the player during her recent training.
