Manchester City under fire for 115 financial offences
The daily The Athletic confirmed on Friday that Manchester City has been found guilty of a series of 115 financial fair‑play offences covering the 2009‑2018 period, despite the club's denials that it says it has complied with the procedure for eight years.
XXL purchases
Since its takeover by the Emirati investment fund, Manchester City has adopted XXL transfer windows. The Citizens signed Enzo Fernandez for €145 million, Elliot Anderson for €135 million and Kevin De Bruyne for €76 million in 2015, which contributed to their conquest of Europe in 2023.
Premier League accusations
The Premier League has identified 115 offences and placed the Skyblues under the league's close scrutiny. According to The Athletic, the club is accused of having breached several financial fair‑play rules between 2009 and 2018.
Among the alleged breaches are supposedly inaccurate or incomplete financial information, fully undeclared wages and violations of UEFA's fair‑play. The club denies these accusations and claims that the allegations are unfounded.
No sanction has been imposed yet. In a statement, a spokesperson said that Manchester City has “scrupulously complied with the procedure in force for eight years.”
But the club remains confident, arguing that the Citizens have always acted in compliance with the rules. The Skyblues now await the Premier League's final decision.
The final verdict, which could bring financial sanctions, will be delivered in the coming weeks. Manchester City continues to prepare for the next season despite the controversy.
