Manchester City under financial allegations – Haaland not allowed to speak

Manchester City is in a critical situation due to serious financial allegations, and superstar Erling Haaland is not allowed to comment on the issue to the press. The 26‑year‑old Norwegian had scored three goals in the recent international matches, but the interview topic was strictly excluded by the club.

Financial ruling and possible sanctions

Two weeks ago Manchester City was found guilty on all counts in the case concerning breaches of the Premier League’s financial rules. The ruling stems from a four‑year investigation covering the period from 2009 to 2018. If the club’s appeal fails, drastic penalties could be imposed, up to forced relegation and the stripping of titles.

Haaland’s limited media presence

The Scandinavian streaming service used the international break for an interview with Haaland, but he was not allowed to answer any questions about the financial allegations. A staff member of the Norwegian media house “Verdens Gang” confirmed that Manchester City had issued the ban. The club then released a specially controlled interview that contained only the usual praise, for example: “I have to say that City means a great deal to me.”

Call for unity ahead of top matches

Ahead of the Premier‑League match on Sunday against Liverpool FC and the Champions‑League fixture next Wednesday against defending champions Paris Saint‑Germain, Haaland spoke about cohesion in a Sky interview. He said: “We must stick together, show each other love, enjoy the journey and smile.” The 26‑year‑old striker emphasized that the team should stay positive and win the game, without addressing the financial issue.

Since the allegations became public, Manchester City appears to be trying to keep Haaland out of the media spotlight. It had been planned for him to answer questions at a press conference at the end of September before Norway’s home match against Portugal – but that did not happen because the ruling was published shortly beforehand.

In Norway, frustration is growing over Haaland’s rare responses to press questions. After the quarter‑final exit at the 2022 World Cup and after the four Nations League matches in September and October, he left the mixed zone quickly each time, without giving interviews.

Whether Haaland’s reticence is self‑imposed or ordered by Manchester City remains unclear. The discussion about the financial case and the possible punishment continues to captivate the football world.
