Manchester City’s contract push puts Rodri’s future in Maresca’s hands
Manchester City have tabled a NEW contract offer for 30‑year‑old Spaniard midfielder Rodri, as revealed in a recent YouTube segment by journalist Fabrizio Romano, while Enzo Maresca faces the decision of securing the player before his current deal expires at the end of next season and a potential free‑transfer in 2027.
Romano said, “At the moment, Rodri has a new contract proposal on the table from Manchester City.” The proposal arrives as his current contract runs out at the end of next season.
This contract proposal underscores the club’s view of Rodri as an integral player, highlighting his tackling, timing, tidy passing and occasional goal‑scoring ability. City’s management praised his ability to combine defensive duties with clean distribution.
Rodri is primarily a defensive midfielder but can also operate centrally if required, and at 30 he still has several good years ahead, making Enzo Maresca desperate to tie him down with a long‑term deal. Maresca, the club’s technical director, would be eager to lock the Spaniard into a long‑term agreement.
In the previous campaign he delivered a solid run of form, scoring two goals in 33 appearances across all competitions, although injuries caused him to miss many games last season. Those missed games limited his overall contribution despite the goal tally.
His personal ambition remains to play for Real Madrid, a lifelong goal he has repeatedly expressed after coming through Atletico Madrid’s youth system. He has said that wearing the Real shirt would fulfill a lifelong ambition.
Maresca must now either secure Rodri’s future with the new contract or consider cashing in, because failing to convince him could see City lose the midfielder on a free transfer after the 2027 season. A decision now will shape City’s midfield planning for the coming seasons.
