Manchester City risk Premier League points deduction after PSR breaches

In 2008/09 Portsmouth entered administration and received a nine‑point penalty, the largest ever imposed. Despite reaching the FA Cup final that season, the club finished bottom of the league and remained there from the second matchday onward.

Everton's 2023/24 season saw an unprecedented two‑stage deduction. Initially hit with a record ten‑point sanction for breaching the PSR, the club successfully appealed to reduce it to six points, only to incur a further two‑point penalty later, becoming the first top‑flight side to receive two separate deductions in one campaign.

Nottingham Forest, promoted in 2022, splurged on more than £200 million for over 40 players within roughly 18 months, shattering their own transfer record twice. The Premier League responded in January 2024 with a four‑point deduction for PSR breaches; the appeal failed, yet the Garibaldi still survived and secured European qualification.

Potential consequences for City

Should the league impose a deduction, Manchester City would join a short list of clubs ever penalised, a stark contrast to the competition's 35‑year history of few such sanctions. The outcome remains pending, with the club preparing its case for the forthcoming hearing.
