Manchester City retains Argentine talent Claudio Echeverri
Manchester City have decided to keep the Argentinian playmaker Claudio Echeverri at the club for at least the first half of the 2026‑27 season, after a frustrating 2025‑26 campaign that saw him return from an unproductive loan spell in January.
Bench depth drives City’s decision
Manchester City are short of options on the bench as they await the completion of Enzo Maresca’s transfer market activity. The club sees Echeverri’s electrifying pace and ability to change games as a useful addition to a limited substitute pool.
He went against Manchester City’s advice to join Bayer Leverkusen on loan for the first half of last season. Echeverri could not force his way into the Leverkusen lineup and returned to City in January. He was then sent on loan to Girona, where he was used primarily as an impact substitute and showed flashes of quality.
City opts to keep Echeverri
A new report indicates that Echeverri will stay at Manchester City for at least the first half of the 2026‑27 season. Enzo Maresca reportedly wants to give the young Argentine minutes this season and has decided not to send him out on loan. Maresca assessed Echeverri during the preseason tour of Asia before confirming the decision.
Typically operating as a number ten or attacking midfielder, Echeverri can also play on either wing when required. His strengths include electrifying pace, mesmerizing dribbling, and defence‑splitting passes that could create scoring opportunities. While not expected to start, he could fulfil a squad‑player role, especially as an impact substitute against tired opponents.
His progress will be closely monitored, and any minutes earned will depend on the squad’s evolving needs as new signings arrive. If he can seize limited opportunities, Echeverri may become a regular option off the bench for Maresca’s side.
