Manchester City face fresh challenge as they seek a new Rodri
Manchester City have lost midfield stalwart Rodri, who signed for Barcelona at the start of the week, and Enzo Maresca said on Friday the club must now find a new Rodri, a task City have handled before through careful recruitment and the integration of emerging talent.
City’s history of replacing legends
Manchester City have said farewell to a number of club icons in recent years. The most recent departure is midfield anchor Rodri, who completed a move to FC Barcelona at the beginning of the week. His exit leaves a void in the heart of City’s midfield.
Speaking on Friday, Enzo Maresca highlighted that City must now replace a club legend. Maresca was asked on Frida y about the challenge and reminded that the FA Cup and Carabao Cup holders have navigated similar transitions before. He said, “Try to find the new Rodri, it is what it is.”
Maresca added that when Rodri arrived, he had not yet won the Ballon d’Or, the Champions League or the Club World Cup, but later achieved many important trophies. “Now the target for us is to try to find the new Rodri,” he said.
The manager recalled past moments when the club faced similar worries – when David Silva left, Kevin De Bruyne arrived; when Sergio Aguero departed, Erling Haaland stepped in. He also noted that Rodri himself replaced Fernandinho and went on to win the Ballon d’Or in his own style.
Maresca mentioned that Elliot Anderson will step into the void left by Rodri and Bernardo Silva. He stressed that Anderson, like any future recruit, will forge his own path rather than being a carbon copy.
Pep Guardiola once said, “Nothing is eternal,” underscoring the club’s constant evolution. Maresca concluded that, given City’s history of successfully replacing legends, the search for a new Rodri is a familiar process.
