Man Utd’s summer gamble hinges on Cole Palmer’s decision
Chelsea attacking midfielder Cole Palmer has decided whether to leave the Blues for Man Utd, where he would work under Red Devils manager Michael Carrick, while England boss Thomas Tuchel has issued him a stern warning about his fitness. The 24‑year‑old has started all five Premier League games this season.
Man United’s pursuit
Man Utd have maintained a long‑term interest in Palmer despite his former spell at Manchester City. TEAMtalk’s transfer correspondent Fraser Fletcher reported on 27 January 2026 that the club wanted to sign him in the summer of 2026.
Sources at the time said the Chelsea and England international star himself was willing to join Man Utd, and director of football Jason Wilcox was keen to bring him to Old Trafford.
Chelsea’s stance and price
Chelsea have made clear they do not wish to sell Palmer and have set a minimum price of £150 million. Palmer has played down suggestions that he wants to move to Man Utd in the summer window.
Journalist Dean Jones, writing for FlashScore, said Palmer remains completely committed to Chelsea and is also committed to playing for England, despite recent speculation about his future.
England focus and injury doubts
England manager Thomas Tuchel called Palmer up for the upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures, but the midfielder withdrew and was omitted from the 2026 World Cup squad.
Tuchel warned that Palmer is playing with discomfort and pain, saying the player cannot compete at the highest level under such conditions and that his repeated absences from camps are a missed opportunity.
Tuchel added that the national team will not compromise on load management and will only rely on players who are fully fit and present at camp, underscoring the challenge Palmer faces in securing both club and country roles.
