Man Utd’s midfield overhaul leaves ‘signing of the season’ out
Manchester United have been told they missed out on the ‘signing of the season’ as they finalise their pursuit of left‑back Lewis Hall, after a summer spent bolstering a midfield depleted by the free‑transfer loss of Casemiro and the injury‑plagued Manuel Ugarte.
Midfield rebuild after key exits
United spent the entire summer hunting midfield reinforcements after the free‑transfer departure of Casemiro and the injury‑hit campaign of Manuel Ugarte. The Red Devils concluded the window with three arrivals: the late signing of Carlos Baleba and the earlier additions of Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans. However, sources told the club they missed out on a spectacular midfielder.
Brentford secured Mamadou Sangare from Lens during the same period. Julien Laurens told United the Frenchman, who has already provided two assists this season, would have been a perfect fit, noting he made the Ligue 1 team of the season and was the best midfielder outside the Paris Saint‑Germain midfield, even if it meant spending £80 million rather than £50‑45 million.
Left‑back options and Hall's status
Lewis Hall emerged as United’s preferred left‑back, but Newcastle completed his new contract without a release clause, effectively removing the short‑term option. Graeme Bailey revealed United still regard Hall highly and keep him on their radar, although the Magpies’ stance means an immediate move is off the table.
The club have also turned their attention to Bournemouth’s Adrien Truffert. Sources rate the French full‑back at £60 million and suggest he is eager to join a club of United’s stature, with scouts watching him regularly and the Red Devils believing he would be a strong fit.
United’s transfer strategy therefore hinges on whether they can persuade either Hall or Truffert to join, while their midfield core of Baleba, Santos and Tielemans aims to fill the void left by Casemiro and Ugarte.
United will keep evaluating their options throughout pre‑season, with the coaching staff keen to integrate the new midfield trio and assess the left‑back situation before the campaign begins.
