Man Utd push to lock in Fernandes as rivals close in
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes is at the centre of a contract saga as the Red Devils aim to lock down the midfielder who was arguably the Premier League’s best player last season, and who has already made a strong start to this campaign, despite interest from elsewhere and a release clause of around £57 million.
Fernandes' on‑field impact
Fernandes finished last season as arguably the best player in the Premier League, contributing a high number of goals and assists. This campaign he has continued that form, featuring prominently in United’s attacking play. His creativity has become essential for the Red side’s midfield balance.
The Portuguese midfielder entered the final year of his current deal, but United retain an option to extend the contract on the same terms until 2028. His original release clause was set at roughly £57 million, and a later clause of £56.7 million expired in July. The club therefore faces a narrow window to secure a long‑term extension.
Interest has come from several European and Saudi Pro League clubs. Galatasaray are prepared to offer a four‑year contract that would double his wages and include a £3.5 million signing‑on fee. Juventus and AC Milan have also been monitoring his situation, while Saudi sides have been linked with him.
United accelerate talks
A report in the Daily Mai claimed Man Utd are adamant about keeping Fernandes and will accelerate negotiations before the end of the year. The club wants to end speculation that he could be lured away from Old Trafford. They are ready to discuss fresh terms that improve his wages.
‘They’ll be more than happy to sit down and discuss fresh terms with Fernandes, give him improved terms as well and extend his contract further, just to end any sort of ongoing speculation that he could be lured away from Old Trafford,’ said Football Insider reporter Pete O’Rourke. He added that Fernandes is happy at Manchester United and that United are obviously very happy with him as he consistently produces the goods.
Now United are boosted by Fernandes reportedly being keen to sign a new deal beyond the end of this season. The next hurdle is agreeing a wage package that satisfies both parties while fending off offers from abroad. Securing the midfielder will cement United’s midfield for the coming years and silence doubters.
