Man Utd legal action as Barcelona and Real Madrid eye JJ Gabriel

Man Utd legal action as Barcelona and Real Madrid eye JJ Gabriel

Manchester United have signalled they may take legal steps after 15‑year‑old midfielder JJ Gabriel told the club he wishes to cancel his registration, while Barcelona and Real Madrid have been linked with the teenager. The move could see the English side lose a highly‑rated prospect just weeks before his 16th birthday.

Gabriel's request and contract status

Kieran King, Senior Sports Writer, highlighted the club’s dilemma as Gabriel informed United that he wants to terminate his registration immediately, aiming to become a free agent. United officials said the teenager’s request left them stunned, as he was slated to join the Carabao Cup squad for the upcoming clash with Brighton.

Had he featured, Gabriel would have broken the club’s record for youngest debutant, overtaking David Gaskell who was 16 years and 19 days old when he first appeared in 1956.

Club officials stress that Gabriel still has time left on his agreement and cannot be de‑registered without consent from all parties. However, once he turns 16 next week, the Irish‑passport‑holding midfielder will be free to negotiate a move abroad.

United contend that any overseas transfer would only yield a modest compensation fee, despite interest from Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich. The Spanish giants and the German club have all been reported as monitoring the situation closely.

Legal options and third‑party pressure

The club is reportedly weighing regulatory and legal measures to protect its position, with The Sun suggesting United may pursue action against any party that facilitates the England Under‑17’s exit from Old Trafford. Such steps could involve invoking FA rules on minor transfers, and the Sport desk noted the potential complexity.

Gabriel’s agent Ali Barat has secured FA authorisation to represent minors after the midfielder expressed a desire to leave United. Barat’s agency Epic Sports, which previously handled Denzel Dumfries’ move to Real Madrid and Nicolas Jackson’s transfer to Aston Villa, is now in talks with Los Blancos and Bayern on Gabriel’s behalf.

The teenager has been training abroad this week, returning to the Barcelona camp he visited before pre‑season. View 2 Images show him working alongside the Spanish side’s youth set‑up.

Michael Carrick urged calm when asked about the midfielder last month, saying: “I’ll just repeat what I said earlier this week: he’s a young boy, it’s important we don’t put anything out here, the exposure and scrutiny we have to be careful. We have to be sensible and think about him. The situation will work itself out.”

Gabriel’s most recent appearance for United came in a 5‑0 victory over Sabah in the UEFA Youth League last month.

Future uncertainty

With his 16th birthday imminent, United’s priority is to clarify the legal and regulatory avenues available before the teenager can sign abroad. The combination of his age, lack of a professional contract and interest from Europe’s biggest clubs has turned his future into a particularly complex transfer scenario.
