Man Utd eye overhaul as Howe tops shortlist after Como loss
Manchester United’s interim boss Michael Carrick is on the brink of dismissal after a humiliating 4‑1 Champions League defeat to Serie A side Como, and a shortlist that now includes Eddie Howe has produced a clear favourite to take over at Old Trafford.
Como dominate United in Champions League
In the first half, Serie A newcomers Como forced United to the sword, netting four goals to leave the visitors trailing. Nico Paz struck twice, while Anastasios Douvikas and Jacobo Ramón added the other scores for Cesc Fabregas’ side.
United struggled to create clear chances and were unable to stem the on‑slaught, prompting interim boss Michael Carrick to later admit the team had only half‑pressed in the second half. He added that a lack of forward and backward runs had left them vulnerable.
Bruno Fernandes criticised the tactical approach in his post‑match press conference, saying “sometimes you have to be more brave under pressure, take the risk of pressing high and making them uncomfortable”. Carrick rebutted, insisting Fernandes’ comments were inaccurate and that the responsibility lay with the coaching staff.
Carrick promises measures as Manchester United sinks
Former player Jamie Carragher labelled Fernandes’ remarks “disgraceful”, accusing the captain of “killing” United by undermining the press. A week earlier, Lisandro Martinez had publicly targeted technical director Jason Wilcox over the club’s transfer activity.
Howe leads managerial shortlist
Alan Nixon revealed on Patreon that former Newcastle boss Eddie Howe is now the favourite to replace Carrick at Old Trafford, joining a four‑man shortlist that also features Antonio Conte, Fabian Hurzeler and Julian Nagelsmann. Howe, who left Newcastle at the end of the season, has confirmed he would take the role if offered.
Carrick insists: I will hold the umbrella while United gets wet
The emerging consensus suggests United will move swiftly, with Howe poised to assume control while the club evaluates the other candidates. The next steps for Manchester United remain to be confirmed as the fallout from the Como defeat continues.
