Man Utd chase Brazilian wing‑back as defence rebuild gathers pace
Man Utd’s defence has become the club’s next priority after reshaping its attack and midfield in the last two summer windows. With a vacant right‑back slot and a rejected bid for Newcastle’s Lewis Hall, the Red Devils are keen on signing a Brazilian wing‑back to plug the gap.
Defence as the new focus
The club’s recent transfer activity has transformed its attacking and midfield ranks, leaving the back line as the remaining weak point. United’s hierarchy therefore view strengthening the defence as essential for the upcoming campaign.
Earlier this summer United attempted to secure a new left‑back, targeting Newcastle star Lewis Hall, but the approach was turned down. The Magpies have set a £75m price tag, while Manchester United believe his value is nearer £60m.
Triple signing plan
According to the online United source Theatre of Red, a ‘trio of new faces in defence’ is expected at Old Trafford next season, covering left‑back, centre‑half and right‑back positions. The club’s chiefs are compiling dossiers on several Premier League options to meet this ambition.
Roma’s right wing‑back Wesley has emerged as the leading candidate for the right‑back role. The 23‑year‑old Brazilian impressed Michael Sansoni’s data department and has been described as a classic wing‑back embodying the flamboyant ethos of United’s historic full‑backs.
Roma paid €25m (£21m) for Wesley in July 2025; United will need to double that valuation, meaning a fee of over €50m (£43m) is required to secure his services.
Beyond Hall, United hold significant interest in Crystal Palace’s Tyrick Mitchell as a backup option. The club also aims to sign a centre‑back who can complement long‑term prospects Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven, with Jarrad Branthwaite (Everton) and Murillo (Nottingham Forest) listed as distinguished candidates.
Additional names linked to the central‑defence hunt include Tottenham Hotspur captain Micky van de Ven. Meanwhile, United must decide on the futures of Lisandro Martinez and Harry Maguire, whose contracts expire in June.
