Man Utd brace for Real Madrid clash over Leverkusen left‑back
Manchester United, under manager Michael Carrick, have made signing Bayer Leverkusen left‑back Miguel Gutierrez their top priority, with the Red Devils prepared to meet Real Madrid’s interest and a potential price tag of around €60 million.
Why United need a new left‑back
The club’s urgency stems from the twilight stage of Luke Shaw’s career and the failure to secure Newcastle’s Lewis Hall earlier this summer. United’s pursuit of Hall fell through, and the defender subsequently signed a long‑term deal with Newcastle, making any future move even tougher.
Gutierrez emerges as the prime target
Gutierrez, 25, progressed through Real Madrid’s academy before joining Bayer Leverkusen from Napoli last summer for €26 million. He is contracted to Leverkusen until 2031, giving the German side little pressure to sell, yet United see him as a leading option.
Real Madrid are reportedly monitoring the defender again, meaning United could face a direct showdown. AC Milan and Juventus have also been linked with the player, underscoring the high demand for his services.
Alternative options on United’s shortlist
Beyond Gutierrez, United are eyeing RB Leipzig’s David Raum, a 28‑year‑old left‑back whose contract expires at the end of the season. Leipzig value Raum at around £30 million, though United hope to negotiate a lower fee.
Crystal Palace left‑back Tyrick Mitchell is another candidate. Mitchell is out of contract at season’s end, and Palace hold an option to extend his deal by a further year; if they fail to secure him, United could move in.
Transfer fees have been reported at €26 million, £30 million and €60 million respectively, reflecting the differing valuations attached to the three players under consideration.
Should United succeed in acquiring Gutierrez, the defender would step up to the Premier League, offering him a platform to test himself at the highest level and potentially accelerate his development. For United, securing the player would address a key defensive weakness and signal intent to compete for major trophies.
